However, it is not only left to the individual’s preference which glazing option is to be used, but for multi-residential and commercial buildings it is actually regulated by the NCC (National Construction Code), which considers the overall energy efficiency of the building.
For
multi-residential and commercial buildings the whole building envelope, curtain wall or façade is subject to a SECTION J Part 2 & Part 3.4 (NCC 2019) report, which prescribes the total amount of energy efficiency to be achieved. This is based on the climate zone, building size, orientation and glass to façade ratio.
All the elements are analysed with regard to glazed windows and doors. The SECTION J Part 2 glazing calculator sets out the minimum U-value and SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) for the whole of window assembly in situ and the elements are further NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) modelled to determine their WERS (Window Energy Rating Scheme) or energy efficiency rating. The permissible amount of air infiltration and water penetration is also specified.
The U-value is a measure of the window insulation, the lower the U-value the better it is. The SHGC is a measure of the amount of radiation that passes through the window, again the lower the SHGC value the better it is . These values determine the level of thermal comfort for the occupants in the building.
Smartech have designed, developed, and tested to Australian Standard (AS) 2047 a range of
advanced energy efficient Tilt and Folding windows that meet these requirements. They incorporate
thermally broken proprietary aluminium framing extrusions that ensure you can use large expanses of glass and use IGUs to 28mm thickness.
Recently Smartech have also tested their
Tilt Window to AS/ NZS 4284: 2008 (Method of Testing Building Facades) which not only covers the provisions of AS2047 but the more stringent requirements for the building façade elements in multi residential and commercial high rise buildings. So you can be sure to receive a fully tested and highly energy efficient product from Smartech.
