Vertical Downlift Door

Turning the usual Smartech Uplift Door on its head, turning it effectively into a “Downlift Door”, this exciting project in Sunshine Beach, Queensland takes an innovative approach.

The ultra-modern residence was designed with crisp lines and simplicity in mind. As such, the architect requested an elegant and clean solution that would completely conceal the garage door after opening. Smartech’s expert team rose to the challenge and pored over a revolutionary design that would go the extra mile, combining door engineering with the home’s architecture.

Applying the first of this pioneering technology, Smartech selected the classic Uplift Door to be altered so it would instead descend into the floor as a “Downlift Door”, rather than sit at ceiling height when open. To achieve this feat, our engineers collaborated with the architects and builders to create an underground void for the door to sit in. The garage is positioned above another room of the house, so within this basement’s concrete wall, a slot was left clear to allow the Uplift Door to retract. All aspects of this structural modification were considered, with the integration of waterproofing within the slot and a pump in the instance of any water coming down.

Seamlessly melting into the surrounding flooring, the design proved to be a wonderful success. The “Downlift Door” smoothly glides downward to be hidden away at the touch of a button. Expertly designed, the top face of the door that remains exposed after opening is perfectly tiled with the same stone pattern to ensure a flawless continuation of the driveway into the garage.
