Rossi Architects were selected to design a new multipurpose hall for Darwin Middle School. The underlying principles for the design of the hall, centre on connectivity. From a large-scale view, the hall acts as a node, connecting Atkins Drive, the rest of the middle school and the adjacent oval.
In order to make it a true multipurpose hall the school required a large-scale acoustic door that could seal off the music room from the gymnasium. Additionally, they also wanted to occasionally use the gymnasium as a stage. To make both options possible whilst ensuring the acoustic sealing of the two halls was critical to meeting all the objectives of the project.
Smartech were selected as the manufacturer and supplier of a large glazed Folding Door and also a customised large-scale sliding door.
The Smartech Glazed Folding Door was installed in the gymnasium which created unimpeded views to the school oval. Hence creating lots of natural light into the gymnasium, bringing in a sense of flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces of the property. Functionality, not just design, was important for this project and therefore this easy-to-use, motorised large glazed folding door far exceeded all expectations of the client.
The Smartech large-scale sliding door is acoustically sealed and divides the music and the sports areas of the multipurpose hall. The ability to open and close the sliding door allows the use of the stage for the sports area when needed. This dual function was a critical success factor for this project. This type of door once opened really allows the maximum use of space in any room. The large-scale sliding door is both an economical and user-friendly solution for the multi-purpose hall. Thus once again, meeting all the important objectives of the client.
